What is the course about?

Enhance your knowledge and experience of playing low flutes under the expert guidance of Carla Rees, Professor of Low Flutes and Contemporary Flutes at the Royal Academy of Music. Over the weekend you will play in ensembles of varying sizes and in sessions working on your solo playing.

What will we cover?

We will work on tone development, intonation, relevant areas of technique and stamina, injury prevention and posture, and we will explore a range of repertoire.

What will we accomplish? 

  • Implement strategies to develop specific areas of your playing
  • Play confidently in low flute ensembles of different sizes
  • Develop your tone production and knowledge of posture
  • Explore a range of low flute repertoire in different styles

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at advanced players of approximately ABRSM Grade 8 upwards (or equivalent), who have some previous experience of low flutes. You will need to be able to play an ensemble part by yourself and have good sightreading skills.

How will the course be taught and will any preparation be required?

The course will be taught through a mixture of masterclasses, small group coaching, and whole group sessions.

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

Please bring repertoire you are working on, some ensemble music will be provided.

Is there anything I need to bring?

Your instrument(s) and any solo or small ensemble repertoire you’d be interested in working on over the weekend.
