We rely on the generous support of volunteers to help run activities across Benslow Music, from welcoming audiences into concerts, to helping maintain our rich music library and archive. As part of our team, volunteers play a vital role in making sure that everyone who comes to our campus receives a warm welcome and is able to enjoy making music.

Why volunteer with us?

As a volunteer, you’ll join a friendly and liked-minded group of music lovers who are looking to give back to their community. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, make friends, encounter a wide range of music and gain experience for your career. You’ll get to learn more about Benslow Music and what we do. We provide you with an induction and any training required and as a thank you, volunteers receive free tickets to our concerts.

My first shift as a volunteer at Benslow Music was fun. Giving something back to one of Hitchin’s finest music venues.

Ways to volunteer

We’re always looking for enthusiastic and friendly people to join our team as volunteers. We offer a number of ways to get involved with our work:

Librarian

Our librarians ensure the smooth day-to-day running of our extensive music library, including:

  • Helping library users with their queries
  • Processing returns of music and books
  • Receiving and processing donations
  • Ongoing development of our library catalogue.

Volunteering as a librarian takes place year-round. Volunteers generally commit to a regular afternoon shift with arrangements discussed with each individual.

Welcome stewards

Our welcome stewards help ensure our concerts run safety and provide a warm welcome to guests. This includes:

  • Giving excellent customer service to audiences and participants when they arrive on site
  • Checking tickets
  • Guiding visitors around the campus, including show people to their rooms
  • Helping set up and tidy away the concert hall
  • Assisting with the safe evacuation of audience members in case of an emergency.

Volunteering as a welcome steward takes place year-round, supporting both our concerts and courses. Most concerts take place on Friday evenings and Monday afternoons, with courses generally being welcomed in on Monday and Friday afternoons. Volunteers are generally asked to sign up to specific events or shifts.

We can also offer opportunities to volunteer in our gardens and offices.

If you’d like to join our team as a volunteer please contact us, we’d love to you hear from you.
