Benslow Music Instrument Loan Scheme

Benslow Music Instrument Loan Scheme has over 800 high quality string and woodwind instruments to lend to talented young musicians aged 7 – 25, so they can fulfil their potential.
We understand the importance of playing on a quality instrument and what this can do for a young musician’s career. We have supported thousands of young players to achieve their goals, including several BBC Young Musician of the Year finalists, an RPS award-winner, a BBC Guardian Young Composer, and many soloists, leaders and players with international, national and regional orchestras and ensembles.
Our instruments and bows – what’s available?
We care for around 800 high quality instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, double basses, wind instruments, harps, and specialist recorders. These vary in origin and value, with both full size and fractional size instruments available to suit younger players.
Successful applicants are matched with instruments to suit their age, experience, and musical achievement. Our top quality instruments are reserved for graduate and post-graduate students, or younger musicians who show outstanding promise. Bows are selected independently and can be loaned with or without an instrument.
Please contact us to discuss your specific needs before you apply, and we can guide you on what’s available.
How do I borrow an instrument?
If you are interested in borrowing one of our instruments, you’ll need to submit an application with support from your instrumental teacher. If successful, we’ll invite you to visit us here at Benslow Music to select an instrument that suits you. We also offer a wide range of bows to match your instrument and enhance your playing.
Do you accept loans or donations of instruments?
Yes, we’re very grateful for donated or loaned instruments! Donating your instruments to the scheme is a beautiful way to give them a new life. Many of our donors tell us how rewarding it is to know their cherished instruments are being played again by the next generation of talented musicians. If you have a quality instrument in good condition, we’d love to hear from you. Do you work in partnership with other organisations?
Yes, absolutely – we’re always looking to collaborate with partners that can help widen our reach, so that young players can access good quality instruments based on their musical talent, not geography or background. If you’re interested in partnering with us, please get in touch.

How are the instruments cared for?
Our instruments are lovingly maintained in our on-site professional workshop, where skilled technicians keep them in excellent condition.
Borrowers are asked to arrange an annual maintenance check, either here at Benslow Music or with one of our trusted suppliers. This helps us keep every instrument sounding its best and ready to inspire others for many years to come.
