What is the course about?
Led by Lawrence Broomfield-McHugh, Head of Singing at Laine Theatre Arts, and Dominic Broomfield-McHugh, Professor of Musicology at the University of Sheffield, this practical and energising course focuses on building vocal confidence and stage presence through iconic musical theatre repertoire.
Through focused vocal work and detailed acting through song, you’ll strengthen your technique while unlocking greater emotional freedom and connection to your material.
The course culminates in an informal performance, giving you the chance to apply your learning in a supportive environment!

How will the course be taught?
We’ll work in a supportive masterclass setting where everyone learns together. You’ll receive individual coaching in front of the group, building resilience and confidence in a positive, encouraging atmosphere.
Acting through song is central to the weekend. We’ll explore intention, subtext and character so that every phrase has purpose. You’ll leave not only singing better but performing with greater ease and authenticity.
The course culminates in an informal sharing session, giving you the chance to apply everything you’ve developed in a welcoming and celebratory space.
Who is the course for?
Open to singers with some prior experience in singing or performance. Perfect for students, amateur performers, or shower singers looking to refresh their skills.
Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?
Please prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs in advance. These could include:
- a Golden Age ballad such as a Rodgers & Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe classic
- a powerful contemporary piece from the songbook of someone like Stephen Schwartz or Alan Menken
- an upbeat character song that allows you to explore storytelling and energy from the likes of Jerry Herman, Kander and Ebb or Robert Lopez
Your songs do not need to be memorised, but coming prepared allows us to focus on confidence, interpretation and performance craft.
What we need from you
You’ll be asked to upload your music at least a week in advance, so our pianist is fully prepared to support you.
- your sheet music in the correct key – one copy for you, one for the pianist
- a recording device
- water
- a notebook and pencil
