Another special violin joins our Instrument Loan Scheme 

A remarkable Silvestre violin joins our Instrument Loan Scheme 
  
International Violin Day on Saturday 13 December is a moment to celebrate the beauty, craft and history of one of the world’s most expressive instruments. This year feels especially meaningful for us as we welcome another exceptional violin into the Benslow Music Instrument Loan Scheme collection.  

 The instrument, made by celebrated 19th-century French luthier Pierre Silvestre in Lyon, has been generously lent to the scheme by Juliet Erridge and her brother. Silvestre’s work is renowned for its richness of tone and outstanding craftsmanship, and this violin is a remarkable example. Restored to full playing potential by luthier Tim Craig in Sevenoaks, it is a rare opportunity for a young musician to discover the sound world of 19th-century France.  

The violin has been part of a musical family for three generations. Juliet’s father first acquired it as a teenager from J&A Beare in London. He treasured it throughout his life, playing it with family and friends and sharing music as a joyful part of everyday living. Juliet, herself musically active, first heard about our scheme through the family of a former borrower and wanted the violin to continue its story in the hands of a talented young player.  

We hope to pair this violin with a young musician in the new year. It will be a significant moment when its next chapter begins in the hands of someone ready to grow their skills and explore the unique voice of this instrument.
