We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Uchenna Ngwe as our new Head of Programmes. Uchenna will play a leading role in shaping and expanding our programmes as we approach our centenary in 2029 and beyond.
Uchenna is an oboist, composer and educator, founder and director of the chamber group Decus Ensemble and has held lecturing roles at both the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire. She studied oboe and cor anglais at Trinity College of Music (now Trinity Laban Conservatoire) and since then, her playing has taken her across Europe, Africa and Asia. Her research interests have led to writing and presenting music documentaries for BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, guest contributions to news and culture programmes, and writing for publications. Uchenna also has a longstanding relationship with Benslow Music, having attending courses as a teenager and last year leading our Intermediate Chamber Orchestra course.
Uchenna said of her appointment:
“Benslow Music was a formative part of my development as a young musician, showing me the importance of joyful and inclusive music education for all ages. I’m extremely excited to be joining this wonderful team, particularly now as we head towards the 100th anniversary of the organisation.”

As Head of Programmes, Uchenna will oversee the development of all Benslow Music’s programmes, including our courses, concerts and Instrument Loan Scheme, helping ensure that we grow and broaden our work to offer musical learning opportunities that enrich people’s lives whatever their background, age or ability.
Michael Duffy, Benslow Music’s Chief Executive commented:
“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Uchenna to Benslow Music. Her vision and approach will help us grow and expand our programmes in exciting directions. Uchenna’s commitment to broadening musical narratives through her work very much aligns with Benslow Music’s ethos of inclusion and lifelong learning.”
