Clarinet
David Campbell is internationally recognised as one of Britain’s leading clarinettists. Early in his career, he was a member of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ ensemble, The Fires of London, focusing on contemporary music. He has since performed as a soloist and chamber musician in over 40 countries, collaborating with top orchestras and ensembles. His repertoire spans classical to modern, with many new works written for him.
Recent highlights include concerts in the Czech Republic, Venezuela, the USA, and Mexico, and premières of concertos by Peter Lieuwen and Charles Fitts, as well as chamber works by Richard Blackford, Roger Steptoe, Gareth Churchill, and John Metcalf. He is especially passionate about clarinet quintets and has performed with renowned string quartets including the Brodsky, Maggini, Endellion, and Sacconi.
Campbell’s discography includes acclaimed recordings of Mozart and Brahms clarinet works, Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, and contemporary pieces by Camilleri, Maxwell Davies, and others. His recording of Lieuwen’s River of Crystal Light and the album Reflections with the Aurora Orchestra received critical praise.
A committed educator, he is Visiting Professor at Canterbury Christ Church University and Head of Woodwind at Westminster School. He directs Musicfest in Aberystwyth and taught at Dartington Summer School. David is UK Chair of the International Clarinet Association and Chair of the Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain.
