Fitzwilliam String Quartet
Ensemble
Founded in 1968, the Fitzwilliam Quartet gained international fame through its close association with Dmitri Shostakovich, becoming the first ensemble to perform and record his complete cycle of 15 string quartets outside the Soviet Union. Following the retirement of its last founding member, violist Alan George, after 56 years, the quartet has welcomed Francis Kefford, embracing a new chapter of creative reimagination.
Renowned for its authoritative interpretations, the quartet's diverse repertoire spans from the 17th century to over 60 contemporary commissions. The ensemble has toured globally, held long-standing university residencies in the UK and USA, and produced an extensive, award-winning discography, including celebrated recordings on historical instruments. The Fitzwilliam Quartet continues to honour its rich legacy through performance, education, and the championing of new and underrepresented works.
