Stephen Gutman is a British pianist known for his wide-ranging repertoire and commitment to contemporary music. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London and with Vlado Perlemuter in Paris, and has performed at major venues including the South Bank and Wigmore Hall, as well as across Europe, the USA, and Japan. His playing was deeply influenced by his friendship with pianist Michal Hambourg.
A winner of both the Brant International and British Contemporary Piano Competitions, Stephen is especially noted for his interpretations of French keyboard music. His acclaimed recording of Rameau’s complete keyboard works on modern piano for the Toccata label earned 5 stars in BBC Music Magazine.
Stephen actively promotes new music, commissioning works from composers such as Julian Anderson, Tansy Davies, Gabriel Jackson, and Anthony Payne. His performances of Birtwistle, Finnissy, and Feldman have been broadcast internationally, and he contributed a chapter on Simon Holt’s piano music to a Boydell publication.
He is a dedicated chamber musician, with long-standing collaborations including soprano Sarah Leonard, and regularly teaches masterclasses and courses for amateur pianists at Benslow Music and Jackdaws.
Stephen has worked with ensembles such as Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Endymion, Composers Ensemble, and the Verbier Festival Ensemble, continually exploring innovative programming and performance.
