At Benslow Music, we’re committed to making thoughtful choices that support a more sustainable future. From reducing waste and energy use to working with local suppliers where we can, we are doing what we can to minimise our environmental impact while continuing to offer inspiring musical experiences.

At Benslow Music, we:

  • Compost our kitchen and food waste to use in the gardens
  • Recycle ink cartridges and bottles
  • Dispose of batteries to be recycled responsibly
  • Are gradually phasing out single-use paper cups
  • Try to be mindful by printing music and other documents only when necessary and using double-sided where possible
  • Support our bees! We are fortunate enough to have fourteen beehives in our grounds. A local apiarist makes honey (which is available at breakfast and also to buy from our reception). We ensure our planting is designed to support the bees and also have a bee pond for their use (and other wildlife).

There’s always more to do, and we will continue to make the best choices we can as we go forward.

Trees for technology

Our new website has been built with sustainability in mind. Working with our website partners at Supercool, we tracked and offset the carbon created during the project. Our work generated 0.58 tonnes of carbon over 58 days, and together we chose to go further by offsetting the equivalent of 1.5 tonnes.

A donation has been made on our behalf to the National Trust’s Plant a Tree scheme, which will plant and care for nine trees as part of its goal to establish 20 million new trees by 2030. This small step reflects our commitment to thoughtful, responsible choices in every part of our work.

How can you help?

Come to campus using public transport if you can – we’re less than a ten minute walk from Hitchin railway station. And while you’re here, please help us by closing windows, turning off lights and keeping printing to a minimum.

Please bring you own re-useable water bottle if you have one. We usually have some for sale in reception, and also stock bamboo toothbrushes and fabric tote bags.
