About Bassoon Extravaganza

Join us for a deep dive into all things bassoon and develop your solo and ensemble playing with expert guidance from tutors Rosie Cow, of London’s Junior Guildhall, and Martin Gatt, professor at the Royal College of Music.

What is the course about?

Enjoy this deep dive course into the bassoon and develop your ensemble and technical skills amongst other like-minded players. Gain expert guidance on your playing from tutors Rosie Cow and Martin Gatt. Rosie teaches at the Junior Guildhall, while Martin is a professor at the Royal College of Music - and has held the role of principal bassoonist for the London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras. We’ll explore a range of repertoire in a workshop style, with coaching and guidance to help you take your playing to the next level. Please note, Rosie will be joining the course for Wednesday only.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course you will: Develop your musicianship skills and have a deeper appreciation and understanding for the bassoon’s musicality. Play together with other like-minded players in a bassoon ensemble. Feel more confident in your playing skills; both solo and ensemble. Develop new ideas and techniques to take with you for future practice and rehearsal.

How will the course be taught?

We’ll work both as a large ensemble and in masterclass format. There will also be opportunities for one-to-one coaching, a reed-making masterclass, and a session on ‘vocalising’, where Martin will help you explore singing through your instrument. Together we’ll cover all aspects of the bassoon’s musicality: tone, intonation, articulation, breathing, expression and technical exercises for fingers.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for bassoon players at Grade 6 and above (or equivalent), with good ensemble and sight-reading skills.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

You don’t need to prepare anything in advance - all music will be provided on the course. Just bring your instrument, some spare reeds - and an open mind!

“Fun, challenging, informative.”
