About Folk Recorder Day

Come and explore folk ornamentation and folk tunes from across the continents. Be prepared to develop your musical skills and give new things a go, including dabbling with odd time signatures and learning by ear in a safe, supportive environment.

What is the course about?

The course is about exploring folk ornamentation and folk tunes from across the continents and playing them on the recorder. This will include tunes from Irish, Swedish and Balkan traditions.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course, you will:

  • have widened your musical skills and given a whole host of new things a go
  • dabbled with odd time signatures and learnt how to figure these out yourself
  • explored learning by ear - in a very safe, supportive environment
  • learnt about different styles of folk traditions and how to play these on the recorder
  • learnt new techniques to do folk ornamentation more authentically

 

How will the course be taught?

This course will be taught in a safe and supportive way and will include reading music as well as exploring ways to learn by ear. You will learn as a group and look at a different style of folk music in each session... including tunes from Irish, Swedish and Balkan traditions.

 

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for players at the Improver, Confident and Standard levels. Please see our Ability Levels Explained for further details. 

Recorder players with a curiosity about using the instrument to explore playing folk musics will get the most from this course. 

Descant, alto or tenor recorders are all wlecome, although C instruments (descant and tenor) will be the easiest to use.

 

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

Music will be provided during the course by the tutor. You do not need to prepare anything in advance, just bring your instrument and a notebooks for recording tips and insights, if you wish.
