About Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble

This course will provide a rare opportunity to play in a pure cornett & sackbutt ensemble; famous for its noble sound and rich sonorities and an endangered species in need of protection! This course offers a fabulous opportunity to indulge yourself in a soundworld where blend, balance and tuning will be the prime objectives.

What is the course about?

If you play cornett or sackbutt and are passionate about doing so then this short course will be one for you, providing ‘total immersion’ and an undiluted cornett & sackbut ensemble. Limited in its first year to 8 participants the sessions will be intense and focused.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course, you will: Know both vocal and instrumental music from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Develop your skills in tuning, balance, blend and delivery of the vocal line. Have opportunity to address technical issues in addition to exploring exciting repertoire. Feel a keen awareness and understanding of vocal delivery through wind instruments.

How will the course be taught?

This course will have four playing sessions per day, with one being used to divide into two groups. Tutor Jeremy West will divide his time between the two groups who will be provided with interesting 4-part repertoire. Other sessions with be tutti (8-part).

Who is the course for?

Open to current cornett and sackbutt players only, participants in this course should be Confident or Skilful according to Benslow’s Guide to Standards. Cornett players who also offer alto or tenor are welcome but all cornett players should read treble and soprano clefs. Sackbutt players should read treble, transposing treble and bass clefs.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

All music will be provided as the course unfolds and will not be distributed in advance. The rep is not so complex as to need advance preparation prior to the event and Jeremy will mix and match the players during the course, keeping participants challenged but never intimidated. Participants should be aware that this course will require playing for 5 to 6 hours a day, so you may find it helpful to work on your stamina before the course begins with little and often practice sessions.
