About Folk Orchestra

A joyful weekend journey into playing and arranging an enchanting range of folk tunes and songs uniquely arranged for intermediate ensemble with members of folk group Moonrakers.

What is the course about?

Classical and folk musicians alike are welcomed to join this delightful exploration into the beauty and techniques of folk music. Your expert tutors, John and Jacqui, specialise in fretted instruments, whistles, cello, fiddle and singing, but can provide parts for any instrument (A=440). Through this course you will deepen your folk skills by playing, musical theory and improvisation. Ending your busy days with relaxing group sessions, you are welcomed to share your own tunes and songs with your fellow musicians, or you can simply relax and enjoy listening.

What will you learn?

Over the weekend, you’ll work on around 10 folk tunes, all with melody, second part, bass and chords. Through working on these tunes, you'll grow your knowledge of improvisation, performance techniques, and how to interpret and arrange.

How will the course be taught?

Most of your time will be spent in one large group, but there will be opportunities to split into smaller groups too.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for musicians working at the Improver, Confident or Skilful levels. Please see our Ability Levels Explained for further details.

Experience with folk music isn’t essential, and you don’t have to be able to read music, although it’s helpful.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

You’ll receive music and links to a video of each tune in advance. Chords for strumming instruments will also be provided.

In addition to your instrument, feel free to bring a notebook to recorder any insights during the course if you wish.

Nurturing and enriching with an effort to actively involve all participants irrespective of their individual skills. The very best of the folk tradition
