About Light Orchestra (Palm Court)

Pretty pieces, sentimental pieces, stirring and inspiring pieces, quirky novelties:  experience the wide variety, the tunefulness and the elegance of the heyday of Light Music in a convivial atmosphere under two expert tutors.

What is the course about?

Enjoy the wide range of accessible music – light, popular and classical – played in the heyday (around 1900-1960) of Light and Palm Court orchestras (so called after the potted palms which were common in the hotels, Spa Halls and Winter Gardens where they played). There will be selections from light opera and musical comedy. Our rehearsals, in chamber music style without conductor – and led, in time-honoured fashion, by a violin virtuoso – will be concentrated and demanding but also great fun. Typical features of the style such as phrasing, rhythmic freedom and expressiveness will be emphasised. Violinists may be asked to alternate between First and Second. A rare opportunity to re-create a grand era and style of music easy on the ear and satisfying to the players.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course you will: Be a better ensemble player and join in re-creating a particular style and era of music. Have grown in confidence, and have played pieces you wouldn’t otherwise have encountered. Improved our ensemble balance, phrasing, rhythmic freedom and expressiveness. For string players, bowing and vibrato for tone production will have improved, along with pizzicato and general technique. Understand more of the evolution of musical comedy, the social and historical context of the music, and changes in orchestration methods.

How will the course be taught?

All sessions are held with the whole group, led by both the tutors, mostly playing repertoire, and rehearsing some passages in detail. The tutors will welcome discussion and Q&A.

Who is the course for?

Confident and skilful string players, woodwind soloists and (if balance allows) a few brass players and a pianist. Good sight-reading and listening skills required.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

Music will be provided by the tutor on the course. Bring a soft pencil and rubber, and a sense of humour!
