About Oboe Weekend with Philip Haworth

The chance to immerse yourself in a weekend of oboe playing with tutor Philip Haworth. Discover new musical repertoire, develop your group playing and grow in confidence in a relaxed environment.

What is the course about?

Join Philip Haworth, oboist in the Atéa Quintet and member of the contemporary classical Riot Ensemble, for this immersive weekend designed to take your oboe playing to the next level. Philip will guide you through healthy warmups and enjoyable exercises to help you develop your technique and gain confidence as a player. We will work both on solo repertoire and oboe ensemble pieces to achieve an improved ear for intonation, learning to listen and respond to your fellow musicians. You’ll get to dive deeper into all aspects of oboe music and playing techniques, giving you a new appreciation for your instrument. We’ll finish with a relaxed group sharing concert at the end of the course to celebrate all you’ve worked on.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course you will: Develop your musicianship skills and have a deeper appreciation and understanding for the oboe’s musicality. Feel more confident in your playing skills, both solo and ensemble. Explore new musical repertoire and contemporary techniques. Gain professional guidance and techniques to take your playing to the next level.

How will the course be taught?

Teaching combines lively group sessions alongside opportunities to workshop and perform solo pieces in a supportive atmosphere. We’ll explore interpretation, technique and musical expression through guided discussion and feedback. There will be an optional session on Saturday afternoon to explore contemporary classical techniques, with more experimental music. Philip will also bring along some unique instruments for you to try - for a surprise!

Who is the course for?

For oboe players who are looking to develop their solo and ensemble playing skills, and experiment with new repertoire and techniques.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

We’ll share music for the ensemble sessions in advance so you have time to familiarise yourself with the works. You’ll also need to choose a solo oboe piece to workshop - you can find a wide range of music on the IMSLP to help you decide. We'll be in touch with you to learn what you’d like to play in advance of the course so our tutors can prepare. Please bring your oboe (and any other oboe family instruments you would like to play).
