Collaborate with fellow musicians to form ensembles and share performances in care settings across Hitchin.
What is the course about?
Music has the power to transform the everyday and in care settings can spark joy and support memory. During this course you'll form a new and flexible ensemble with fellow participants, collaborate and devise short recital programmes that you'll then perform to residents of care homes around Hitchin.
Led by clarinettist Margaret Archibald, who has been recognised for her wealth of experience in making music in the wider community, you'll work intensively over a few days learning repertoire and refining your rehearsal and presentation skills. The course will help you develop a flexible and open-minded approach to your performance.
The course is developed in collaboration with music charity Everyone Matters, which has developed a network of care homes in the local. Together we understand that interlude of musical entertainment and a chance to chat over refreshments is a little moment of joy that can make a big difference.
What will you learn?
During the course you will:
work through an intensive rehearsal period, collaborating in flexible ensembles.
create a concert programme suitable for care settings.
have discussions and understand the benefits to both performers and audiences of music making in care homes.
gain performance experience and understand how to support fellow musicians in a range of settings and situations.
How will the course be taught?
The course is entirely practical, with the emphasis on gaining skills in efficient rehearsal and an outgoing performance style through taking part.
During the first half of the course you be led through a number of intensive rehearsal sessions before spending the second half presenting performances.
Who is the course for?
This course is open to all instrumentalists and solo singers. Participants are welcome to bring multiple instruments should they wish.
The course is designed for players at the Confident and Skilful levels. Please see our Ability Levels Explained for further details.
Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?
Most of the music will be provided during the course. Your input into the course repertoire is actively encouraged and there will be the opportunity for you to discuss your musical ideas with Margaret ahead of the course.
In addition to your instruments and any music you wish to bring, please bring smart casual clothes suitable for performance. For your comfort, please bear in mind that care homes are often generously heated.
