About String Quartets with Coull Quartet (3-night option)

Enjoy an inspiring weekend of string quartet playing and enhance your skills with coaching from a professional quartet with over 40 years’ experience.

What is the course about?

Join us for an inspiring weekend and elevate your string quartet’s playing with friendly and professional support, as the ever-popular Coull Quartet return to Benslow Music to offer their expert advice and encouragement. You’ll get an insight into all aspects of quartet playing, from achieving balance and intonation, to exploring tonal colours, phrasing and musical style. Coaching is tailored to your quartet’s needs and choice of music, so feel free to bring along pieces you would like to develop or work on together. The course also includes a ticket to the Coull Quartet’s concert on the Friday, where you’ll be treated to an evening of chamber music by Shostakovich, Haydn and Dvořák.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course you will: Develop your quartet’s playing, bringing out your best as individual musicians and as an ensemble. Learn how to rehearse together more productively. Feel confident playing your chosen repertoire and have fun tackling new works. Get tailored advice from professional musicians with over 40 years’ experience.

How will the course be taught?

Your string quartet will receive dedicated coaching sessions from each of the members of the Coull Quartet, as well as time dedicated to your own rehearsal. There will be time on the additional day for extra coaching from the tutors to deepen your understanding.

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for existing string quartets who play together regularly, with ten group spots available.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

Please bring your instruments and chosen repertoire along with you as sheet music, with a couple of spare copies for our tutors. We recommend preparing your individual parts in advance to make the most of the course.

“The tutors helped us with their humour and supportive teaching, providing a relaxed environment in which to improve our playing. It was a real pleasure to be taught this way.”
