A day of alto celebration and immersing yourself in all things viola with soloist, chamber musician and teacher, Martin Outram. Working on a range of viola music with others and on your own, there is something for every violist who loves the middle voice and wants to know more.
What is the course about?
Martin Outram, viola player with the Maggini Quartet and a renowned soloist in his own right, returns with his regular duo partner, pianist Julian Rolton for another Viola Day. The day is conducted in a friendly and informal atmosphere in which participants will have the chance to play viola ensemble music and perform in a masterclass with Julian - so bring along one or two pre-prepared pieces to work on.
By the end of this course you will be able to play with better understanding of how musical and technical challenges within works being studied may be addressed and developed.
How will the course be taught?
The course will be a mixture of group playing and masterclass sessions. You will need to prepare either an unaccompanied piece or a work with piano that you can play with Julian on the day. Martin will then share his feedback in a friendly, positive and constructive atmosphere, enabling you to improve your level of performance.
Who is the course for?
This course is for viola players of Confident and Skilful levels, as outlined in the Benslow Guide to Ability Levels.
Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?
Please bring your own solo music including piano accompaniments. Martin will provide all ensemble music.
Even if you don't see yourself as a solo player and mainly play in orchestras or quartets this is a fun way to learn - with ensemble playing and short masterclass sessions.
