About Advanced Violin Summer School

Take your playing further in this immersive course for high-level violinists, part of Benslow Music’s new Advanced String Summer School.

What is the course about?

Gina McCormack will guide you in all areas of technique and interpretation in a series of friendly, informal masterclasses and private lessons. In addition to the lessons with Gina, pianist Jordi Bitlloch will also be available to rehearse repertoire of your choice for violin and piano. This is an ideal opportunity to work on improving your interpretation and your duo skills, as well as delving deeper into anything technical you need help with individually. Throughout the week there will be open discussions about all aspects of playing and performance, from good posture and stage presentation to coping with nerves. You will be encouraged to present a piece informally on the final day Please note: bursaries are available and those under 27 are automatically eligible for a 25% reduction in course fees (excluding supplements).

What will you learn?

By the end of the course, you will: Apply advanced technical strategies to address specific challenges in varied repertoire Demonstrate a greater awareness of how to create colour and character in the music. Interpret repertoire from a variety of stylistic periods with informed musical understanding Understand the effect posture, stance, and relaxed gestures have on sound production Rehearse and perform collaboratively with sensitivity and professionalism

How will the course be taught?

The course comprises a series of masterclasses and individual lessons and sessions. Gina will share her knowledge and expertise on all areas of playing and performance, making comments with her usual directness and humour in a friendly, positive and constructive atmosphere. There will be time for individual practice during the week.

Who is the course for?

This is a course for violinists at the most advanced level, from conservatoire entry standard upwards. You will be a Skilful according to Benslow Music’s standards and looking to develop your already high-level technical and musical skills.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

You should bring your own solo music to work on during the course, ideally preparing works with piano, or a concerto, that you can enjoy playing with Jordi, but unaccompanied works are also welcomed. (Do remember to bring your piano parts, and if you choose to present anything very unusual, please provide an extra score)
