About Discover Your Authentic Voice

A chance to connect with your voice and discover it’s possibilities, build confidence and experience the sheer joy of singing. You are your instrument!

What is the course about?

The health benefits of singing are well documented. Singing is fun, but more than that it’s a full body, full brain experience and you don’t have to be perfect at it to enjoy all the beneficial aspects. Your voice is unique and the aim of this holistic course is to help you discover your individual sound, build confidence and begin to realise your vocal potential. Your course tutors Theresa and Brian have many years experience as performer practitioners and are adept at creating the safe and supportive atmosphere necessary for singers of all levels to improve, flourish and have fun.

What will you learn?

You’ll be encouraged to explore physicality, creativity, imagination and aspects of performance psychology. By the end of the course, amongst other things you will:

  • have started to develop a technical tool box.
  • have an understanding of basic brain gym and how to use it in a singing context.
  • have improved confidence through connection to the voice.

How will the course be taught?

All participants will receive a short individual diagnostic session at the start of the course. There will be a daily warm up before classes begin focusing on posture, breathing,
getting ready to learn using Brain gym exercises.

There will be mostly one to one lessons with group sessions to put the work on it’s feet. Participants will be encouraged to observe when not otherwise engaged in a session. Group sessions will encourage peer led learning and there will be an informal presentation at the end of course for those who wish to participate.

Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to begin, return to, or deepen their relationship with their voice.

The personalised approach of the individual sessions and diagnostic appraisal means this course can accommodate singers of Learner, Improver, Confident and Skilful levels, as outlined in the Benslow Guide to Ability Levels.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

As someone of a learner or improver level (see the Benslow Guide to Ability Levels), please bring one piece of music of any period, style, or language. Please not Pop. Your tutors can advise as necessary.

As a confident singer, please bring 2 pieces of any period, style and language.

Please bring three clear copies of each, for yourself, tutor and accompanist. It’s not necessary for music to be memorised but you should have a working knowledge of your chosen piece.
Please also bring loose, comfortable clothes you can move in and a yoga mat if you have one.
