About Introduction to String Chamber Music

Start your chamber music journey in a supportive setting with coaching and guidance from the Tedesca Quartet.

What is the course about?

Nic, Jenny, Clare and Richard will lead this course for those who are now feeling confident enough to start learning some of the easier chamber music repertoire but who maybe are not yet confident to play on their own in a group. The tutors will gently guide participants through the music which will be sent out prior to the course. At the beginning of the course we will all play together, discussing some of the techniques of playing chamber music and answering any questions that may arise. As the course progresses the tutors will create smaller groups which will be individually coached. The aim is that by the end of the course participants will have gained enough confidence to hold their own musical line in a small ensemble and be relaxed enough to enjoy the making of music together.

What will you learn?

You will learn to play some wonderful chamber music repertoire in a safe, friendly environment. By the end of this course, you will:

  • have confidence to hold a part on your own or with one or two others whilst playing small scale chamber music.
  • begin to discover the listening and ensemble skills needed to play chamber music.

How will the course be taught?

To start your course, you’ll play in one large group with tutors Nic, Jenny, Clare and Richard leading from the front of each instrumental line. During the weekend, you’ll move into smaller groups, with members of the Quartet playing alongside you or coaching, as appropriate.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for string players working at the Learner and Improver levels. Please see our Ability Levels Explained for further details.

You’ll need the ability to have a go, and keep going when you make mistakes. If you have orchestral experience that would be helpful, but it’s far from necessary.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

The music will be chosen and sent out in advance of the course so participants can familiarise themselves with it. Please do not be overwhelmed by listening to recordings of the music chosen. It will be played on the course at a speed which everyone can manage. Please bring yourself and your instrument!

The three tutors are all excellent. The way the teach by simply radiating enthusiasm. They are brilliant.
