About Winter Elementary Strings

An opportunity for string players of modest ability to learn together and explore ensemble playing

What is the course about?

This well-established course offers the perfect opportunity for players of elementary level (around Grades 1-3) to unite and experience the joys of playing in a full ensemble. Music explored on the course is designed to be accessible and won’t demand more than first position playing and will be in easy keys.

Tutors, Janet and Willie Hicks, will offer technical support, help with sight-reading and give valuable advice on how to progress.

What will you learn?

During the course you will cover a wide spectrum of music specially arranged to be accessible to elementary players. By the end of this course you will:

  • Improve your sightreading
  • Developed your technique
  • Gained understanding and skills for ensemble playing

How will the course be taught?

The course is taught mainly in large-group sessions with some sectional sessions. The focus will be on sight-reading simple pieces which start at a very basic level and progress gently in difficulty throughout the course.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for string players who are playing at the Leaner level (around Grades 1-3). Please see our Ability Levels Explained for further details.

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

Music is provided during the course by the tutors, no preparation is required.

Please note that you will not receive music in advance of the course. That way everyone starts from the same points and nobody need feel that they are competing with anyone except themselves.

“Great for improving sight reading and confidence in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere.”
