What is the course about?

Spend time celebrating the many sides, sounds and styles of jazz in this course led by professional jazz musicians and educators Joy Ellis (piano) and Adam Osmianski (drums). 

The course is designed to cover a broad spectrum, perfect if you're newer to playing jazz or are a regular player wishing to enhance your skills. Joy and Adam will take you through large ensemble sessions featuring a range of jazz styles and ideas, alongside smaller groups sessions, masterclasses, workshops and demonstrations intended to hone your skills and practical understanding in areas such as improvisation and stylistic interpretation, Alongside, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy some relaxed jazz sessions with fellow participants. 

 

What will you learn?

By the end of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Identify common chord progressions, chord symbols and other nomenclature.
  • Develop your language for solo improvisation.
  • Recognise and interpret various styles, eras and genres of jazz.

 

How will the course be taught?

You’ll work in variety of different sessions throughout the course. This will include ensemble sessions with the full group, smaller group work, practical masterclasses and workshops and individuals sessions. You will receive insights and feedback from the course leaders throughout. 

 

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for players at the Improver, Confident and Skilful levels (please see our Ability Levels Explained for further details). You might be newer to jazz or have some experience and are looking to hone your skills. You will need to have a good level of technical proficiency on your instruments to get the most out of the course. 

 

Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?

Music will be shared ahead of the course. No specific preparation is necessary, but brushing up on scales and arpeggios is recommended. 

In addition to your instrument and your printed music, we recommend bringing a pencil and notebook for recording any notes or insights during the course. Brass players should also bring their mutes.
