Immerse yourself in the joyful and rollicking songs of Gilbert and Sullivan in this fun-filled short course for singers of all abilities.
What is the course about?
Come and sing the joyful songs of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Savoy Operas’, led by self-confessed ‘wand’ring minstrel’, G&S expert and vocal tutor Brian Parsons.
This welcoming and fun-filled course is open to anyone who’d like to give singing a try! We’ll be focusing on Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Savoy Operas’ – a unique form of comic opera which emerged in the late 1800s, giving you the chance to try out different theatrical styles and characters to suit your voice. You are welcome to bring other songs and ballads from the Victorian and Edwardian periods to try out as well.
What will you learn?
By the end of the course you will:
Enjoy the chance to take on different characters and musical styles from the comic ‘Savoy Operas’.
Deepen your knowledge and understanding of the unique period and style of Gilbert & Sullivan’s work and its cultural importance in the 21st century.
Grow your confidence singing with a friendly and supportive group.
Meet other amateur singers in a beautiful and friendly setting.
How will the course be taught?
We’ll be working as a group, with Brian providing insight and coaching as we work through our different chosen songs.
Who is the course for?
Suitable for singers of all levels and abilities. We may try to match you with other singers on the course to form duets, trios and quartets for particular songs. You are also welcome to apply with an existing duet partner or ensemble.
Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?
If you’d like some help choosing what to work on during the course, let us know when you apply, and our tutors can help find you songs and ballads from the repertoire to compliment your voice.
It’s a great idea to memorise your songs if you can, but don’t worry if you are not ‘off copy’ in advance of the course.
Nearer the time Brian might suggest a chorus or ensemble number that would be useful for you to look at in advance.
"A truly joyous course under a delightful tutor…providing a welcome opportunity to inhabit the world of the Savoy Operas without the hassles of amateur theatrical performance."
