About The Art of Jazz Vocals
Discover the art of jazz vocals in this new summer course which offers the chance to sing with a Big Band, and develop your own cabaret style showcase with expert coaching from Jenny Howe and Anton Browne - vocal coaches on The Voice UK. This course is part of the Benslow Jazz Summer School.
What is the course about?
Join this inspiring new course which offers a deep dive into the art of jazz vocals, led by two of the UK’s top vocalists and coaches: Anton Browne and Jenny Howe.
Craft your own cabaret style set to showcase your unique voice, and experience the thrill of singing live with our resident Big Band. With expert and tailored advice from Anton and Jenny, you’ll develop specific jazz vocal techniques and approaches, study the art of stagecraft and presentation, and discover how to make popular songs your own.
As part of the course, you’ll get a free ticket to A Night of Jazz with Paul Eshelby and Friends, here at Benslow Music on the Wednesday evening.
What will you learn?
By the end of the course you will:
Realise your potential as a singer and performer, developing your vocal tone and individual style, with expert guidance and coaching.
Gain a deeper understanding of jazz musicality - from hearing the blues and shaping phrasing to exploring improvisation, ad-libs and scat.
Grow your confidence as a performer and feel ready to take the stage.
Sing with a Big Band, bringing classic jazz standards to life with energy and style.
Master microphone technique, stagecraft, and the art of communicating and listening to fellow musicians.
How will the course be taught?
You’ll work with Jenny and Anton in a group workshop style, as well as having the chance to join our resident Big Band for larger ensemble rehearsals.
Who is the course for?
This course is designed for amateur and professional singers who are interested in developing their jazz vocal and performance skills. You’ll need to be comfortable performing in front of the group, and with a large Big Band.
Will music be provided and do you need to prepare or bring anything?
You’ll need to prepare two jazz standard songs and bring along chord charts for them. Tutors can suggest a song from their library if you’d like ideas, or you’re welcome to bring your own arrangement. It’s helpful to have a playback and recording device to capture your rehearsals and performances (a phone is fine) and you may want to bring outfits to perform in for our informal concerts.
